The Natural Life

We joined the natural health care route over 6 years ago after adopting Clarence who initially appeared ‘allergic to life’- he was a ball of itchiness, had digestive issues, spikes in behaviour issues, toe cysts, ear problems.

The list goes on but numerous vet visits always resulted in medications that often solved the symptoms but not the cause.

Now, I’m not saying natural health care is a magic wand but it can have so many benefits for owners who are committed to supporting their dog’s health in a gentle holistic way.

Natural health care doesn’t just cover feeding and treats- it can also be significant change when looking at treatments, medicating and vaccinating your dog

Here are some of the main reasons to consider it:

Natural remedies, like herbal supplements, homeopathic treatments, and natural oils, often carry fewer side effects, making them safer, especially for long-term use.

  1. Fewer Side Effects: Many conventional medications, like antibiotics, painkillers and steroids can have side effects that may impact a dog’s overall well-being. Steroids, for example, can cause weight gain, muscle weakness, behaviour changes, fat redistribution,
  2. Improved Digestion and Nutrition: Natural diets and supplements are easier on a dog’s digestive system and often more bioavailable, meaning the body can better absorb and use the nutrients. Fresh, whole foods can promote a stronger immune system, shinier coat, better breath, and overall vitality.
  3. Reduces Allergies and Sensitivities: Some dogs are sensitive to fillers like corn, wheat, and soy or artificial additives. Natural dog foods often exclude these common allergens, focusing instead on single-source proteins and gentle carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, making them suitable for sensitive or allergy-prone dogs.
  4. Holistic Approach to Health: Natural health care looks at the whole animal and aims to address root causes, not just symptoms. By focusing on factors like nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation, and emotional well-being, natural health care can support your dog’s overall quality of life.
  5. Lower Risk of Toxins and Allergens: Many commercial pet products contain artificial colours, preservatives, and fillers that can trigger allergies and sensitivities in dogs. Natural health products are typically free from these additives, reducing the risk of adverse reactions.
  6. Supports Aging Dogs: Natural health care options, like glucosamine supplements, acupuncture, and turmeric, can be helpful in managing the symptoms of aging, such as arthritis and mobility issues, without resorting to heavy medications. They can provide long-term relief and maintain quality of life.
  7. Sustainable and Ethical: Many natural health products are made with sustainable practices, often using eco-friendly ingredients and ethical sourcing.
  8. Promotes Preventative Care: Natural health care often emphasises prevention, supporting immune function, mental stimulation, and overall well-being before issues develop. Preventative measures, like probiotics, vitamins, and a balanced, whole-food diet, can reduce the need for intervention later
  1. Supports Long-Term Health and Longevity: Healthier foods and natural supplements can support long-term well-being, possibly extending a dog’s lifespan by reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Natural treats, like dehydrated meats or vegetable chews, provide rewarding snacks without added sugars, salts, or unhealthy fats that can lead to obesity and related issues.

Natural health care, food, and treats are typically better for dogs because they tend to prioritise quality ingredients, minimise additives, and support dogs’ overall wellness in ways that align with their natural biology. Choosing natural options can mean peace of mind and a greater sense of control over a dog’s health and well-being.

It’s always best to consult with a vet but be sure to find one who is trained in natural or integrative care, to ensure that any natural treatments are safe and appropriate for your dog and to save yourself from coming up against resistance.
